I Have Come Here To Die

Description

“Good Christian people, I have not come here to preach a sermon; I have come here to die. For according to the law and by the law I am judged to die, and therefore I will speak nothing against it. I am come hither to accuse no man, nor to speak of that whereof I am accused and condemned to die, but I pray God save the King and send him long to reign over you, for a gentler nor a more merciful prince was there never, and to me he was ever a good, a gentle, and sovereign lord. And if any person will meddle of my cause, I require them to judge the best. And thus I take my leave of the world and of you all, and I heartily desire you all to pray for me.”

No. 2 of THE PAINTED WORDS PROJECT

The Painted Words Project is a personal project of mine, very simply me illustrating some of my favourite quotes, books, stories, etc., incorporating fine art painting, typography, experiments and just overall having a blast of a time.

The second instalment to this project is the infamous execution speech of Anne Boleyn, an incredible lady who I've obsessed over for a long time. Claire Ridgway described it best, "She did not protest her innocence and preach to the crowd as her brother had, she simply did what was expected of her." Which I found extremely intriguing considering that this was a fierce and manipulative lady who's responsible for England's break with Rome and later held as "the most influential and important Queen Consort England has ever had."

The piece was done not only as part of this project but also as the title page for my current AS Fine Arts project on significant events and my chosen theme is, you guessed it, The Rise and Fall of Anne Boleyn.

Done with pencil, watercolour, black gel pen and quink ink & bleach on 300gsm medium grain cartridge paper. I wanted to do the writing with a proper Vietnamese sharpened fountain pen (or pretty much a calligraphy pen) but the ink bled like crazy when written on top of watercolour (even when dried) so I had to revert back to my trusty gel pen.

And yes, despite my best efforts, there is a spelling mistake in there, which drives me up the wall. But I am only human (fuckin' pathetic excuse).
